Corn Fritters

A snack special enough to have a day named after it

What are Corn Fritters?

Before we can know about corn fritters, first we need to know what a fritter is! A fritter is a fried food which can feature meat, vegetables, fruit, and/or dough inside. Surprisingly, a corn fritter is a fritter with the primary ingredient being corn, either kernel or meal. Corn flour and cornstarch are sometimes used in recipes as well (for added corniness).

The history of the corn fritter has origins spanning back hundreds of years to Native American cuisine. Native Americans commonly used corn as an ingredient in dishes, but they did not have access to deep frying techniques. As European explorers came from overseas, they were taught recipes from the Native Americans. From there, Europeans used this newly found information to create cornmeal-based variations in their bread. This led to the creation of the fritter we know today.
